Delivering on “Access for All” at the Somerville Museum

The Somerville Museum is a neighborhood gem in Somerville, Massachusetts. Known as a champion for local artists and civic historians, the Museum hosts niche exhibitions that deeply explore the histories of our community. It is a local treasure in our eyes. In 2021, the Museum launched a capital campaign, “Access for All,” to modernize the old structure and improve the accessibility of the building. As the architects and interior designers on the project, we are proud to support the Museum’s mission and deliver on their goal of modernizing this beloved cultural institution.

The first part of our involvement began with the design and construction of an accessible entry. As the photos show, now the Museum features new bluestone steps with iron railings, as well as elevator access to all floor levels.

From there, the project developed into a bigger endeavor: we called in our interior design team to update the Museum’s common areas, from the lobby and kitchen to the bathrooms and hallways. We even created a multi-purpose room. With the support and collaboration of local city officials, artists, and patrons, this second phase was possible.

Our design choices for both phases reflect the Museum's mission to be both accessible and modern. While the exterior of the new addition used similar materials to match the existing red brick facade and white embellishments, the interior spaces have a modern flare with contemporary light fixtures and vibrant wall colors and textures.
